Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting Brings FlowCam Users Together to Share Research

In May 2022 our FlowCam Aquatic Team attended the Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting (JASM) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This historic meeting brought together scientists from nine different societies to form the largest gathering of its kind in history. It was a welcome change after two years of virtual meetings and limited in-person collaboration.

The groups present included the American Fisheries Society (the meeting hosts), the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), and the North American Lake Management Society (NALMS). This year's conference attracted an especially large number of freshwater researchers due in part to its location on the banks of the Grand River.

Savannah Judge FlowCam Presentation at JASM 2022In addition to demonstrating FlowCam and VisualSpreadsheet in the exhibit hall, our team hosted training sessions for current FlowCam users and presented FlowCam data at scientific and poster sessions. We also had the chance to attend a variety of presentations from other scientists, showcasing the latest freshwater and marine research from around the globe. Pictured here is Savannah Judge giving her presentation titled "Using FlowCam for Marine HAB Monitoring in the Field-Based Undergraduate Ocean Classroom”. Savannah's talk focused on integrating FlowCam into undergraduate-level curriculums, using recent FlowCam research grant recipient Maine Maritime Academy as a case study.

Zabdiel Roldan Ayala - FlowCam presentation at JASM 2022Another presentation, titled "Characterization of Phytoplankton Assemblages in Long Island Sound Using the FlowCam 8100", was given by Zabdiel Roldan Ayala, a Master's student from Queens College in New York City. Zabdiel was the recipient of the 2021 FlowCam Aquatic Research Grant for Graduate Students. He used FlowCam to study HAB (harmful algal bloom) communities in Long Island Sound and attended JASM to present his findings. Zabdiel is an up-and-coming HAB scientist from Puerto Rico who will be attending the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) this fall to pursue his Ph.D.

FlowCam research was also presented in poster format, including a poster produced by our own team in collaboration with our long-time customer, Hunter Adams, and a poster developed through professor and student collaboration at St. Catherine University. Click each poster below to enlarge.

In addition to the research presented and sessions attended, it was wonderful to be back in person and able to have face-to-face conversations with our customers about their ongoing research, current challenges, and product feedback. If you weren't able to attend this meeting, we hope to see you next time, or at one of our other upcoming conferences.
