Enthusiasm and productivity filled our 12-week summer internship program thanks to our 3 hard-working, highly capable FlowCam interns. Engaged in challenging projects ranging from building software tools, to performing fundamental studies and developing new applications, FlowCam summer interns generated data and solved problems through strategic experimental design and collaboration. At the outset of our program, we aimed to provide real work opportunities and mentorship for undergraduate and recent post-baccalaureate graduates as they explore their career paths. In the end, we all benefited and found great value from the experience. We are excited about the quality of work our interns produced and can’t wait to see how their experience with FlowCam contributes to their very bright futures!
Brian Brogan, Colby College Class of 2026
Hello! My name is Brian Brogan, and I’ve had a great summer as an engineering intern. Being a part of this engaging and innovative team has given me the perfect opportunity to apply and grow what I have learned in my studies as a third-year computer science major at Colby College. My projects included developing and launching a Python application for field-of-view quality control of FlowCam instruments, improving documentation of FlowCam base-plate builds, and creating a program to recommend capture settings for improved segmentation in VisualSpreadsheet, among others.
"My favorite part of the internship was the combination of learning and application that my work involved. Whenever I learned something new, I applied what I learned to achieve my project goals, which I found to be the most enriching method of practice."
Looking forward, I am very grateful for this opportunity and know that the skills and connections I gained here will be enormous assets in future endeavors.
Madison Thornton, Eckerd College Class of 2026
Hello! I'm Madison Thornton, a rising Junior at Eckerd College pursuing a degree in Marine Biology. During my time working with FlowCam, I worked to validate optimal phytoplankton capture studies further, assisted in establishing baseline performance measures for specific hardware components and attended an instrument demonstration at Bigelow Labs for Oceanographic Studies.
"My favorite aspect of this internship was the amount of exposure I received working in the lab, from experimental design, generating data, and troubleshooting, to reporting the research and results."
I'm excited to return to Eckerd and be the in-house FlowCam expert in the lab.
Oliver Todreas, Bates College Class of 2023
Hello, I'm Oliver Todreas. This summer I worked on studies to improve instrument precision and to create protocols and marketing content. I have produced a wide array of material, ranging from internal technical notes to FlowCam blog posts. As an intern, I have enjoyed getting to know people across departments, finding solutions to problems with experts, and learning from their diverse skills. It has been rewarding to work with subject matter experts in finding ways to introduce FlowCam technology in the field. I look forward to working in the sciences and applying my analytical, problem-solving, laboratory-oriented, and interpersonal skills in the future.
"My favorite part of the internship has been diving into the data we've generated to search for patterns and trends."
Thank you to our summer 2024 class of interns. It has been a delight having you on our team this summer. Your dedication and hard work have resulted in many great contributions. Beyond that, we've enjoyed your curiosity and approach to problem-solving. We wish you much success in your future ventures!
